Waseela helps you keep track of money between you and the people around you: who lent what, who owes whom, shared bills, collections and committees. It is a record-keeping app. Waseela never holds, moves or sends money.
Waseela is run by Waseela, Inc., a Delaware corporation ("we"). We decide how your data is used. Questions or requests: privacy@mywaseela.com.
What we store
- Your account: your phone number, the name you give, your main currency, language and time zone.
- Your people: the names (and other names) you use for people, and their numbers if you add them.
- Your records: what you record: amounts, dates, descriptions, who paid, who owes whom, due dates, reminders, groups, collections and committees; and whether the other people agreed.
- Signing in: sign-in attempts (to stop abuse) and the devices you're signed in on, and, if you allow notifications, a push address for each device.
We don't show ads, we don't sell or rent your data, and we don't track you across other apps or websites. This website uses no cookies and no analytics.
Your phone's contacts
If you allow it, Waseela reads your phone's contacts on your phone, so you can pick people instead of typing numbers. Your address book is never uploaded. Only the people you choose are sent to us, as a name and number. You can use the phone's own contact picker without giving any permission at all.
On your phone
So you can see your balances without a connection, the app keeps a copy of the records you last looked at on your phone, for up to a week. It's removed when you sign out, and before anyone else signs in on that phone.
People who aren't on Waseela
When you record money with someone, you tell us their name and maybe their number. We keep it so your records make sense to you. We never message them on your behalf: reminders are drafted for you to send yourself, from your own WhatsApp or SMS. If they join Waseela with that number, they can see the records you shared with them, agree with them or say something's wrong. If you're one of these people and want to ask about your data, write to us at the address above.
Who sees what
- Records you share with someone are visible to them once they join Waseela. Records you mark private, and people you keep private, are seen only by you.
- A share link you send shows only what that link is for, to whoever has it, until it expires (30 days) or you stop it.
- Our team doesn't look at your records unless you ask us to. When you write to us from the app (under You, Get help), you can choose to let our team see your records while we help. They see what you see and can't change anything. It lasts up to 7 days, ends when you stop it or close the request, and the app shows you when we last looked. What you write to us, and our answers, are kept with your account and deleted with it.
Keeping Waseela safe
If someone is reported to us for misusing Waseela, our team can pause their account (they're signed out and can't sign in) or block a phone number from being used. Records are never changed: entries shared with other people stay in their records. We keep a short note of why, for our team only, and a blocked number only for as long as it's blocked.
Services we use
We use these companies to run Waseela. They process data for us, not for themselves:
- Cloudflare: runs the app's servers and this website.
- Neon: hosts our database.
- Twilio: sends your sign-in codes by SMS or WhatsApp.
- Expo, Apple and Google: deliver notifications to your phone, if you allow them.
- Sentry: crash and error reports, with ids only: no names, amounts or numbers.
- Coming soon: chat and voice. When you type or speak to Waseela, what you say is processed by Anthropic (Claude) to suggest what to record, and voice by a speech-to-text provider we'll name here before voice is available. Nothing is saved until you confirm it. Voice recordings are deleted after 30 days.
These companies may process data in the United States, the European Union and other countries. We rely on their standard data protection terms for transfers.
Why we use your data
- To provide Waseela: keeping your records and showing them to the people in them.
- To keep it safe and working: stopping abuse, signing you in, fixing errors. These are our legitimate interests, and yours.
- With your permission: reading your phone's contacts and sending notifications. You can turn these off in your phone's settings at any time.
How long we keep it
- Your account and records: until you delete your account.
- Sign-in attempts, and sessions that have ended: 30 days.
- Backups: deleted data can remain in our database provider's backups for up to 30 days, then it's gone.
Download your data, or delete your account
In the app, under You → Your data, you can download everything Waseela has that you can see, as a file you keep: your details, your people, groups and every entry, also as a spreadsheet.
You can also delete your account there. It takes effect at once:
- Deleted: your number and sign-in on every device, your people, reminders and links you shared, and entries and groups that only you can see.
- Kept for others: records you shared with people on Waseela stay in their records, because they are their records of their own money too. Your name and number are removed from them: they see you by their own name for you, or as someone who left Waseela.
You can correct your details and records in the app at any time. You may also have the right to object to how we use your data, or to complain to your data protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office). We'd like to hear from you first:privacy@mywaseela.com.
Security
Data travels encrypted. Sign-in codes and session keys are never stored in readable form. We record ids, not names, amounts or numbers, in our logs. If a breach affects you, we'll tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
Age
Waseela is for people aged 18 and over.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the date above. If a change matters to how your data is used, we'll tell you in the app first.
